Tyres, balancing and wheel alignment: where to start

Tyre replacement, balancing and alignment deal with different questions. If the car vibrates or wears a tyre unevenly, start by describing what you have noticed. Booking the service whose name sounds closest to the symptom can miss the need to check something else first.

Check the fitted tyre details

The size printed on the sidewall is useful when checking replacement options. A car model may be supplied with more than one wheel size, so its name alone may not identify the tyre fitted. Mention any run-flat marking or other relevant specification when you enquire.

The RSA’s wheel and tyre guidance explains condition checks and the minimum permitted tread depth of 1.6 mm. Tread is only one part of tyre condition; damage and other concerns also need attention.

Use the pressures specified for your vehicle and load, rather than assuming the number printed on a tyre is the correct operating pressure. Consult the handbook or vehicle label. If pressure keeps falling, arrange an assessment rather than treating repeated inflation as a repair.

A puncture needs more than a description

Tell the team how quickly pressure is lost and whether the car has been driven with the tyre flat or badly underinflated. A puncture’s position and the condition of the tyre affect whether a repair is suitable. A photograph cannot show every aspect of internal condition.

Ask about assessment and fitting arrangements before making a trip. If the tyre is not safe to use, discuss assistance or another appropriate way of getting the vehicle or wheel to the workshop. Do not drive on a flat tyre to avoid changing your plans.

If a replacement is required, ask which specification and options suit the car. Keep the quoted tyre, fitting and any additional work clear so that you understand the complete arrangement.

Balancing and alignment do different work

Wheel balancing concerns the distribution of weight in the wheel-and-tyre assembly. Alignment concerns the wheel geometry. Michelin’s tyre-care information explains these as separate aspects of maintaining tyres and handling.

Tell the workshop where you feel a vibration, when it occurs and whether it started after tyre work or an impact. If the steering pulls, describe whether it happens consistently and whether the steering wheel position has changed. Those observations help guide checks without proving a diagnosis.

A balancing or alignment appointment should not be assumed to resolve a problem caused by a damaged or worn component. Ask what the assessment shows and whether suspension or steering work should be considered.

Uneven wear is useful information

Mention if one tyre or one edge appears to wear faster than the others. If you have noticed an impact, repeated pressure loss or a change in handling, include that history. Replacing the tyre may be necessary, but understanding the wear pattern is a separate question.

Try to keep the description practical: which wheel, which edge and when you first noticed it. There is no need to carry out a driving test or inspection that you cannot perform safely. A workshop can assess the car directly.

If your NCT is approaching, include the date in the enquiry. Tyres may be part of test preparation, but a forthcoming test is not a reason to postpone dealing with a current safety concern.
