Explain when the noise or handling change happens

A knock over uneven roads, vibration at a particular speed or a change when turning gives the workshop a useful starting point. Mention whether it happens on one side and whether it followed a pothole impact, tyre replacement or other work.

Steering and suspension components work together with the tyres and wheels. Checking the wider system helps establish whether alignment alone is appropriate or whether worn or damaged components need attention first.

Plan the repair around the findings

The work can involve components such as springs, shock absorbers, joints or steering parts, depending on the vehicle and the fault. Ask which items need attention and whether alignment or further checks are part of the proposed job.

Bring an NCT or CVRT report if the issue was identified during testing. If the vehicle's steering or handling has changed significantly, contact the workshop before arranging to drive it in.

After a pothole or kerb impact

Tell the workshop about a recent impact even if the car initially seemed unaffected. Explain whether the steering wheel position changed, a tyre started losing pressure or a noise appeared afterwards. The wheel, tyre, alignment and suspension are related, but each may need its own checks.

An alignment adjustment should not be assumed to resolve every pull or uneven-wear problem. Worn or damaged components may need attention before a useful alignment can be carried out. Ask what the inspection has established.

Steering rack concerns need a specific assessment

If you have been advised that the steering rack is at fault, bring the report and describe the symptoms. Noise, fluid loss or changes in assistance do not by themselves establish which component needs repair. Electric and hydraulic systems can require different checks.
